Carpet stain removal, including the worst offenders

These simple carpet cleaning tips and your go-to carpet stain eliminators make it easy for you to get rid of stubborn stains like red wine, dirt, or coffee.

Carpet can provide softness and warmth underfoot but can also stain your floors. Even a home with no pets or kids is susceptible to the occasional spillage or smudge that can quickly seep through the fibers and create a set-in stain. Although carpet stains may seem difficult to clean, they can be done with ease using the right cleaning tools and techniques. Carpet stains can be removed regardless of what type of spillage you are dealing with. To learn how to remove carpet stains, follow the steps below.

How to Remove Stains from Carpet

You did so much to remind people to get off their feet and not bring food into your carpeted rooms. It happened—the coffee spillage at work or the Thanksgiving gravy train. Remember that water is often the best cleaning agent for carpets. Blot the stain (don't rub it) with a damp, white cloth.

If you find that plain water isn't working, try a carpet stain-removal product or DIY remedy. You will find the best carpet stain removal solution that is tailored to your stain. These are the steps to help you clean carpet stains.

Step 1: Discard excess immediately.

You should scrape away any liquids as quickly as possible using a butter knife or spoon. This will prevent your cleanable spill from becoming a permanent stain. Use a white, absorbent, clean cloth to gently wipe off any excess liquid. Work from the outside edge toward the center of the stain to stop it from spreading. Keep going until no more color is visible on the cloth.

Step 2: Use a carpet stain-removing product.

Apply a carpet stain removal product according to the manufacturer's instructions. The carpet can also be cleaned with vinegar. For a homemade carpet stain remover, stir 1 1/2 tsp mild dishwashing solution into 1 quart of warm, salted water. Add 1/4 tsp of white vinegar to the warm water and mix well. You should not over-wet carpet cleaners. This could cause damage to the backing. Let it sit for ten minutes.

Step 3: Blot any stains.

Blot the outside with a clean, white, absorbent towel. Continue to do this until the stain has disappeared. Blot the area with cold water and then dry. You can dry your damp areas by covering them with a half-inch thick layer of cloth or paper towels. Then, weigh them with a heavier object. Once dry, change out the paper towels.
